2008 National Chief Interview

2008 National Chief, Jake Wellman

How do you feel to be a national officer? What do you find most exciting about the role?

I'm more excited than any words can express to serve as the 2008 National Chief. The opportunity to work with arrowmen around the nation to deliver the ArrowCorps5 projects this summer is definitely the most exciting part of my job this year!

What are you most looking forward to?

With the ArrowCorps5 projects this summer, we will redefine the way the Order of the Arrow views service. The ability to participate, much less lead, is certainly something to look forward to.

What are your earliest memories of the OA?

I remember lining up for my Ordeal. While confused and lost, I could sense the ideals of brotherhood, cheerfulness and service radiating through everyone around me. I knew that was where I belonged.

What was your first leadership position and what was the greatest lesson you learned from it?

My first leadership position was serving as a patrol leader my first year in Boy Scouts. In this position, I learned that my patrol as a whole could work better together than individually. This lesson of teamwork has followed me since.

What is the coolest thing you've done in Scouting?

In February 2007, I traveled to Okinawa and Tokyo, Japan to staff a Western Region NLS. This experience opened my eyes to our world and the impact we can have a leaders of our generation.

What makes you proudest to be an Arrowman?

When I look at the scouts who are members of the OA, and how they embody brotherhood, cheerfulness and service, I am filled with pride for our organization.

What awesome things have you done in the OA?

The experiences I have gone through and brothers I have made in the three high adventure programs the OA offers have left a lasting impression on me that affects my leadership, my attitude and the way I live my life!

What makes the OA so cool?

"The fellowship we share among all embers of our Order makes us a true brotherhood. Over 160,000 arrowmen seeking to serve their fellow man portrays a powerful image for our society!"

Revised 12/31/2007.
