July 20th, Day Fourteen - Ahoy, Base is Ahead!
We woke up somewhat late, as we had a chance to enjoy the morning. We cooked oatmeal and relaxed, for our next mission was to head back to base. We eventually packed up our campsite and headed for base, which was only a short paddle from our campsite. "Ahoy, base is ahead" is the unforgettable phrase Vern yelled. We entered the Northern Tier docks when our final phase began: clean up and pack up.
As soon as we got to the docks, we unpacked all the canoes and brushed the canoes down inside and out. We cleaned the canoes out well, preventing anything from growing on the sides and corroding them. We threw out all our garbage, returned our packs, our tents, paddles, and lifejackets. We picked up our personal gear and made our way back to the first night cabins where we first stayed. It seemed so long ago when I was last at the base. The last time I was there was indeed long ago, as I was a different person. We then had a welcome chance to take a long hot shower and relax in the base's saunas. After we finished getting used to the luxuries of civilization, I got into my class A uniform for dinner. Our crew then enjoyed our final night together, one I will truly not forget. As the night came to an end, I called my parents and hit the trading post. Following a long trek, one must stock up on patches. Before I knew it, the day was over, and I was in my bed sound asleep. << Introduction - < Previous Day Next Day > - Post Voyage >> Revised 03/30/04
