Service to America
The Order of the Arrow's
Commitment to Serve
In 1997,
President Bill Clinton held a summit in Washington, DC, on volunteerism. At this
conference, he challenged all youth organizations to make a commitment to provide service
in their surrounding communities. The Boy Scouts of America committed 200 million hours of
service by the end of the year 2000.
In order to meet this community service objective, the
Boy Scouts of America developed a program called "Service to America." With
service being a cornerstone of the Order of the Arrow's purpose, the BSA asked the Order
to promote this program to local packs, troops, and teams.
Your lodge's task is to promote the Service to America
program in troops and teams when conducting unit elections and/or camp promotion visits.
For packs, promotion of the community service program should be done at a pack meeting or
pack committee meeting. In addition to the unit visitations, your lodge is being asked to
annually conduct a community service promotion presentation at each Cub Scout and Boy
Scout district roundtable.
National BSA recognition will be presented to lodges
that do an outstanding job in promoting the Service to America program. A community
service questionnaire is enclosed that will be used to select the top lodge in each
section. The questionnaire will be added to the Lodge Charter Renewal Kit in 1998.
The Service to America program will give the Order
an opportunity to serve not only Scouting but America. Thank you for the time and energy
that you all devote to Scouting and the Order of the Arrow.
Yours in service,
Tony Fiori
